As a proactive response to climate change and environmental destruction, newTree implements a programme of assisted natural regeneration of village forests and promotion of income-generating activities for rural populations in Burkina Faso. In order to regenerate local mixed forests, newTree supply solid fences to protect degraded land. The local population (families or women associations) take the decision for the protection of their degraded land and their contribution is the handwork. newTree therefore provides knowhow and material for metal fences. Each year different tree inventories of the vegetation are made to know the biomass, the biodiversity and the growth rate of the trees. newTree trains local populations in restoration of degraded land, agroforestery and sustainable use of the forests. Additionally, newTree provides income generating activities such as beekeeping and the production of high-value vegetable crops. The training of women in the construction and utilisation of fuel-efficient cooking stoves will further enhance the impact and sustainability of this project.

Between 2003 and November 2009, over 200 000 trees, 120 tree species with a total surface area of 312 hectares were placed under long-term protection. Today, newTree actively participates with 111 families and women groups in 52 villages in the central and northern part of the country. 1400 improved cooking stoves are used by the women in the villages.
