Five honeybee species including Apis laboriosa, A. dorsata, A. cerana, A. florea and A. andreniformis have been, so far, found native in Vietnam, while an exotic species, A. mellifera was imported and has been kept in the country since 1960’s. In addition to their importance in the food chain, these most effective agents of pollination also contribute to improve biodiversity, to keep ecosystem balance, and to increase high yield of almost all the world plants, which are lungs and primary producers to maintain lives of animal world including human beings. Among 6 honeybee species, A. cerana is target for extra income and job creation of the poor by domesticating and keeping this bee species for honey and other products whereas A. mellifera has been mostly kept by commercial beekeepers. VBRDC was, therefore, born and has been growing up so far to uphold the roles of honeybees sustainable.

Founded in 1984 as a governmental institution and became an NGO since 2006, VBRDC has 2 main functions of honeybee research and beekeeping development. The Centre has been run by a director board of 3 with functional departments of Biological and Biotechnology, Bee Breeding, Bee Veterinary, Beekeeping Extension, Finance and Administration, and Library. There are 2 PhD., 6 MSc., 13 BSc., 17 beekeepers and technicians, who have been employees and worked at laboratories, in apiaries and at offices of the Centre.
