Summary of practice
Scavengers in our city dump is one of the least privilege sectors of society. They survive only on the recyclables gathered in our landfill. Enhancing composting in the area can help augment income while encouraging partnership for development in reforestation.

From the compost product of the scavengers, we have created one tree plant nursery in one school.
Context description
Philippines as a 3rd world country is located in the tropics. One way we can be part of global climate change solution is through reforestation. We receive much rainfall & what we plant grows.
Stakeholders involvement
The scavengers, educational institutions and other sectors of society.
Critical Success Factors
We have not yet fully tap the potential of biodegradable in our city dump. Most trash and garbage are still bulldozed to cover our landfill.
Overcoming obstacles and avoiding potential pitfalls
The lack of facilities & incentive in sorting trash. We gave mountainbikes as incentive for sorting trash and we wish to give rice for seggregating garbage this time and a sorting shed.
Results & Lessons learned
Conditionality & Replicability
Zero waste or at least mimimize the volume of garbage dump in landfills and turning garbage into compost product alleviating income of scavengers and disseminating the compost product, together with seeds & plastic bags in schools for tree plant nurseries for reforestation.
Sustainability of practice, planning and implementation implications
Additional key information
An estimated 20 sacks of 50 kg. bags of compost can be harvested in our city dump should the sorting activity is fully implemented.
