Experiencia
Using the Site Support Groups approach which are the groups of local people living around the Protected areas especially Kibira National Park, Ruvubu National Park, Rwihinda Nature Reserve and Rusizi Nature Reserve, ABO managed to support them in tree planting to restore degraded areas and demarcate the boundary of those areas. With the production from tree nurseries, one part is used for reformation and in their land planting while the other part is sold to get income. Sensitization of local communities and youth in secondary schools is one of the strategy of the organization to raise awareness on conservation of environment and birds. Some aachievements: - Building a system of participatory natural resources management in Central Albertine Rift Forests (funded by WWF-EARPO), - Conservation of Rusizi Nature Reserve through income generating activities (funded by NC-IUCN) - Conservation of Kibira National Park through SSG development activities (DGIS-TMF ). - Instituting effective monitoring of PAs (IBAs) as a contribution to reducing the rate of biodiversity loss in Africa (Funded by EC) - Conservation in the face of climate change: developing an adaptive management framework for the conservation of birds and other biodiversity across Africa (Funded by MacArthur Foundation) - involvement of local administration in effective law application on Kibira National Park ( funded by CARPE) - Improvement of livelihood of riparian of Kibira national Park trough the soil conservation of watersheds.
