Reasons to participate

Currently, we are looking at conservation financing options. We have considered carbon funding as one option. Others include watershed protection for hydroelectric power dams, certification of wild coffee and other non-tiber forest products and the like. Participation on such discussions and relevant trainings will strengthen our capacity and help us to learn from the experiences of others.

Conserved biodiversity is a public good. In many parts of the world, the burden of conserving biodiversity has been left to the local community living in and around conservation priority areas. This may not be sustainable under the current changing world. Hence, there is a need to acknowledge the conservation efforts of local community by providing some incentives. This may include creating markets for local products produced in a sustainable way, carbon trade, certification and premium prices, and the like.

What are sustainable finacing mechanisms to conserve biodiversity in developing countries? This group intends to create a forum for exchanging good practices in creating incentive mechanisms which encourage and finacially benefit local communities engaged in sustainable managment of natural resources.
