Region

ACVE is an association which militates for the restoration, the conservation and protection of the environment. Its members are of a high training level (University, High Institutes, etc.) and of long experiences in different public and private sectors on high responsibility levels (Minister, Senator, General Manager, Environment Experts, Energy Experts, etc.). We have experience in weeding of the young plantations installed on NTAHANGWA and MUHA rivers’ banks. This project is ended. This activity allowed plantation and up keeping of 60.000 plantations on a 30 ha surface in February, 2006. A BIF13,000,000 financing was assured by the Belgian Technical Cooperation; We did an environment restoration in BUGABIRA Commune (KIRUNDO Province) by the reforestation and water control. The project cost was of BIF 38,025,000 of which BIF 24,505,000 was assured by the Micro grant program of the NTEAP project of NBI and the additional BIF 13,520,000 was brought by the beneficiaries. The project was carried out from July, 2006 till April, 2007. The project is completed. We have two projects running as following A project on Valorisation on Native Woody Species of Burundi is currently going on. In This project we are promoting indigenous tree planting in the country and it is a unique project on its kind in Burundi. It is a project funded by Ecosystem Grant Program, EGP IUNC NL with Euro 68,678,00 This project is for 14 months starting from May this year Another running project is the Integration of the Environment in the Amelioration of Agriculture production of small scale farmers in the Muramvya Communal Area. The project was funded by EU (European Union) with Euro 170,773,895 started in November 2008 will end in 2011.

Reasons to participate

Looking at the aim and objectives of our organisation we want to equip members in the Carbon funding mechanisms to contribute in climate change mitigation hence to improve the livelihoods of our vulnerable communities and the entire world. We all know that climate change impacts do not respect and physical boundary. Therefore the entire world need to fight it together.

We are especially interested in promoting native trees and shrubs species for forestry and agro forestry. Indeed, native trees and shrubs species in Burundi seems to have lots of potentialities and may meet the need of sustainable development : economical, social and environmental assets. Though, only exotic trees and shrubs species (as Eucalyptus sp., Pinus sp., Leucaena sp., Calliandra sp.) are multiplied and spread through development programs. Almost nothing have been done in Burundi on native species promotion. That’s why, ACVE is negotiating with IUCN Netherlands to implement a project that will start promotion and development of native species. The first part of this project will aim to realize a comprehensive document about actual knowledge on native species but also experiences in Rwanda, Congo even Tanzania. We seek knowledge and experiences to share about native species multiplication, agro forestry uses and promotion, such species shall also contribute to mitigate Green house gases hence to reduce global warming.

Burundi is a country recovering from a decade civil war. During that period of war, Parks and Forests Reserves were destroyed by internal displaced people. These Parks are under the jurisdiction of the National Institute of Environment and Nature conservation INECN that is desperately looking for funds to restore the Parks and Forests Reserves through natives’ tree planting. Our Association works hands in hands with INECN in order to extend forest cover in Burundi. This Shall be the opportunity to engage together in common projects with them to enrich some of the destroyed sites in and around the Parks and Naturals Forests. If we can develop skills in Carbon Funding as a Mechanism for conservation, we can therefore conserve all the destroyed areas within and around the natural forests and parks in our country.
