EventBiodiversity Fund, eight years of experience

Diversity-based production in agro- and agroforestry ecosystems

The conservation of biodiversity is still threatened by the large-scale plundering of natural resources, monocultures in agriculture, irresponsible use of pesticides and genetically modified organisms. The objective of the Biodiversity Fund has been to promote the sustainable use of natural resources, preserving biodiversity and at the same time alleviating poverty. The Biodiversity Fund has been a well-known source of support for many green NGOs. HIVOS and Oxfam Novib have run the Biodiversity Fund for 8 years, from 2001-2008. It promoted certification of quality production , production according to social and environmental norms. And it promoted biodiversity in agroecosystems. Because such systems are less susceptible to shocks and stresses such as to pests, diseases, price and climate variability, and they even play a considerable role in climate mitigation, as carbon sinks.

On March 18, 2010 there will be an expert meeting based on the Fund's experiences "Biodiversity, a strategic value in resilient food production systems" Organisers: HIVOS and IUCN NL/Natureandpoverty.net. It is held from 12.30-17:00 at Nutshuis Riviervismarkt 5, The Hague. www.nutshuis.nl, central Den Haag, close to Grote Markt. By invitation only: send mail to W.douma(at)hivos.nl

The Fund, managed by HIVOS and Oxfam Novib has been financially supported by DGIS and obtained advise by IUCN NL. It was meant specifically for NGOs forging international co-operation.

Well-known partners from this Fund have been a.o GRAIN, IFOAM, ISEAL, Phytotrade, the CBDC and others. Check out the FIND section here for useful publications.

In November 2007 Hivos and Oxfam Novib jointly organised the conference ‘Social and Environmental Responsibility in Progress’, together with IUCN NL and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The key question addressed at this conference was: To what extent can quality systems contribute to the protection of biodiversity? See the FIND section.
